Supplementary Underinsured Motorist and Why You Need to Increase it!

This is the most important part of any motorcycle (or even automobile) insurance policy. This coverage protects you in the event that you are injured by a driver having a really bad policy. It is coverage from your insurance carrier to compensate you for your pain and suffering when the other driver’s policy is inadequate to do so. The single most important thing that you can do to protect yourself in the event that you are injured due to the negligence of another driver is to purchase the most Supplementary Underinsured Motorist (SUM) coverage that you can afford. At a minimum you should purchase at least $100,000 of SUM coverage, but ideally you should have $250,000 or more of SUM coverage. Thus, in the event that you are injured by a driver who has the minimum coverage required in NY, $25,000, you can receive additional compensation from your own insurance carrier up to the maximum amount of your SUM coverage, less whatever sum of money you have received from the offending driver’s liability insurance carrier. When you check your policy, and you see that you do not have sufficient SUM coverage, you need to fix that immediately. Call your insurance broker/carrier and insist on significantly more SUM coverage.

What to do After a Long Island or NYC Motorcycle Accident

In the immediate aftermath of a motorcycle crash, it is not uncommon to experience confusion, disorientation and stress — especially if you are injured. However, you can take some important steps immediately following the accident that may improve the outcome.

  • After a motorcycle accident, the first step is to call the police. It is very important to ensure that they come to the scene of the accident. You should also identify any witnesses and gather their names and addresses.
  • If possible, take pictures of the entire accident scene showing the vehicles after the accident, as well as individual photos of the damages to both vehicles. Photos are an excellent tool for memorializing the scene. On a side note – DO NOT post your accident or your injuries on any social media sites until after you are advised by your attorney to do so.
  • If you are injured (and even if you THINK you are not injured), you should seek medical treatment right away. Serious injuries that commonly result from motorcycle accidents, such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and compound fractures, need immediate medical attention.Contact your Insurance Company and report the accident, or have someone do it for you. Do not give any statements to your insurance company or anyone else except for the police officer at the scene.
  • The final step is to contact a motorcycle injury lawyer. I have been representing injured motorcyclists for many years. I understand the challenges that riders face, and I know how devastating injuries from motorcycle accidents can be. I am prepared to take action to ensure that you are able to make a full recovery and receive the compensation you are entitled to.
